01
The challenge
Steppe Arena is a large-span sports complex with an indoor ice surface. Holding stable ice and isolating it from the extreme outdoor climate demanded an envelope with very high thermal performance and low air leakage. The curved massing and large glazed entrance called for careful structural detailing.
02
Our solution
We clad the complex in Kraspan rainscreen metal panels, engineered as a low-leakage ventilated façade built for the steppe climate. The nodes where the panels meet the curved roof and the large glazed entrance were tightly detailed, cutting the energy the ice regime requires.
03
The plan
Together with the structural and mechanical teams we ran thermal and condensation modelling and pre-resolved the nodes where the façade meets the curved roof. We developed a staged plan and a working-at-height safety scheme for the large glazed entrance.
04
Implementation
We installed the structural façade in full, delivering the stable conditions the ice regime depends on. The glowing entrance gives the complex its welcoming, open public face.
